Manrique Foundation (Taho de Tahíche) – this museum is named after local artist & architect César Manrique (1919-1992). Thanks to a grant that Manrique received from Nelson Rockefeller, he lived in New York during the mid-1960s, where he painted some of his abstract artisitic works. Manrique, who supported the growth of tourism in Lanzarote (on the condition that there would be no high-rise hotels developed on the island).
The non-profit Manrique Foundation was set up in 1992 to encourage tourists to visit his home – which features some of his works, as well as those from other artists, such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. This museum currently receives over 300,000 visitors a year. Manrique’s home was built near the site of volcanic eruptions that occurred on the island during the 18th century. Admission: free for Lanzarote residents, €8 (tourists). Hours: 10:00 am – 6:00 pm (Monday-Saturday) (November 1 – June 30th); 10:00 am – 7:00 pm (daily)(July 1st – October 31).
